Everyone can learn how to make invitations in Canva with this super easy tutorial!
CANVA TUTORIAL
I don’t know about you all, but I am not a huge fan of cards. I don’t know if it’s just me or if it’s because there are so many choices or maybe it’s just because they are so expensive and then what do you do with them?! Invitations, however, follow the same lines in that they can get expensive, but they also set the foundation for your event, so they play a very important role in party planning! And sometimes it’s easier to just purchase pre-made invitations, but other times you can’t quite find what you are looking for. And there are so many ways to make your own now! But don’t worry, they are not all paid programs, you can do just about everything you might want in Canva for FREE!
Canva is an awesome program that can be used to make all kinds of graphics! I use it for pinterest, the blog, and so much more! And now, I use it for making party invitations! Everything in this tutorial is included in the FREE version of Canva.
GET CREATIVE
First, make sure to create an account with Canva. Once you’ve set that up, click on create Design and then type “Invitation.” There are a few different options, but I prefer the 5×7 portrait version. If you prefer square, be sure to select that option.
This should bring up an invitation that you can begin to edit.
The best thing about Canva is that they have a large variety of free premade design templates that you can use to make printable invitations. You can start with a blank canvas, or you can scroll through and select the one you’d like to edit or create your very own. Let’s choose one we like — Don’t worry, you can change/delete anything that you don’t like as we go! For this example, I’m choosing a winter-themed template since I’m working on a winter birthday party invite. Click on the design that you want to load it onto your canvas.
EASY TO USE
Now you can change pretty much anything that you want. To start by changing any element, click on it. Once you click on the element you’d like to change, options pop up at the top. This is what my screen looked like when I clicked on the text. At the top, you will see different options where you can change the font, size, and color. If your text is grouped together with other lines, as shown in the example below, click on the UNGROUP button and you will be able to edit the lines of text separately.
I edited to show YETI TO PARTY and selected a different font. You can change the colors of the font if you like and what I like about color changes it that you can type in the color and it’ll pull the closest colors to that name. Try Forest or Blush to see what comes up.
I also wanted to change up the invitation a bit more by placing a Yeti somewhere on it. To do that, I clicked ELEMENTS and searched “yeti.”. If you make a mistake or don’t like something that you have done, simply hit the UNDO button, or click the item and hit “DELETE.” All the yeti elements are items that require payment. Most are only $1 though so it’s up to you. They’ll just keep the Canva watermarking on them until you pay.
The final step is saving your invitation. To do this, click “DOWNLOAD” and save your file as a JPEG or PDF. If you choose the PDF option, you can add crop marks and bleed to your final document so you get a perfect cut every time.
And you can get really creative. I enjoy picking a template and then swapping everything. I usually just like the placement of the template I choose and then swap all the elements and text to be my own picks. This can be as quick as you like… or take as long as you like! And you can save them and work on them later too.
OH and they have a super easy to use mobile app too which I use all the time. Like ALL THE TIME. Start a design and save for later, or finish one up and save it right to your phone. They also offer printing options which I have used a lot lately and the products come back so beautiful!
Here’s what I ended up doing for Ella’s Yeti to Party Invite… It took me a couple of drafts but I’m pretty happy with how it came out!
