I wrote an original article on Mother’s Day for the Towne Post Magazine here. Needless to say, this was written before Corona really came into play. With that being said, I would like to share (and edit) some of my ideas on how you can celebrate the Mommas in your life this Mother’s Day below. With the times being a little different, we need to adapt, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still connect and celebrate! So here are a few ways to make your mom feel special even if you can’t be together!
Bouquets
As listed in my original article, I stick with this idea. Although you might need to get a little creative. Think about those small florists – most of them are doing free delivery during this time and they would love your support! Google your local florist and many should come up. We here in Indy have quite a few who have set up online ordering and are offering some really special Mother’s Day options.
The girls and I are going to try these adorable drawn bouquets. I might even get some paint out and try my own hand at it. I figured these were a great way to send a bouquet that involves art and the kids! Easily tied with a bow and put in an envelope! Boom!
OTHER MOTHER’S DAY IDEAS
Handwritten Letter
The art of handwriting is lost art almost. But it’s like everything is becoming new again these days. We are reverting to drive in movies, playing board games, and writing letters. Send your mom a fun letter. Then have your kids send one too. She will love it and maybe even frame it. Or, if you have an old letter you wrote your mom, you could frame that and send it to her too!
Maybe try your had at calligraphy and create a handwritten poem or saying in fancy script!
This is also easily framed and sent via snail mail.
Make a Donation
Still sticking with this option too! It’s a great way to share the love and make your mom feel special. Most of our moms have a cause that’s close to their heart and if you aren’t sure, be sneaking and ask some questions on your next call.
Dontation Ideas: American Cancer Society, Feeding America, Covid Relief, Salvation Army,
Alzheimer’s Society, and Susan B Komen.
Get Together
Ok, so this one needs a little editing. Since we can’t GET together, there are still a lot of fun ways to BE together. Maybe set up a Zoom Call or Facetime with your mom over breakfast. OR order brunches in to both your home and hers and gather together around the table – with computers of course. Enjoy a virtual brunch. It’s not exactly the same, but we can always celebrate in person later!
Make sure to grab a fun Zoom Background too if you use that!
I think you can even change your backgrounds on Facetime too!
MOM LOVE
Picture Books
Another good #stuckathome option! Many people are using this time to get organized and life in order which includes organizing photos. So pull out a bunch of your mom. Include all you can find. Even include photos of drawings your kids have done – floral images would be amazing to add! Then find your favorite place online to grab a book! Send it straight to her house!
Or, make your own story for her with the kids. She’ll love this!
Maybe tell them a story about your mom from your childhood and let them write it out and illustrate.
This will be one for the books! Bind it with ribbon and send it on it’s way.
Do Something Crazy
Another one from the original article that needs edited… We can’t do much CRAZY right now, but maybe work on sending her a few surprises… Or set up a family karaoke for mother’s day with a great mother’s day playlist?! Maybe create a video montage of all the greatest mom hits over the years! From Christmas mornings to graduations to your very first time meeting her! Include whatever you like!
Other ideas might include, getting another parent involved to create a fun scavenger hunt, create a jigsaw puzzle with you and your siblings on it, or make her something funny like socks with faces on them! Whatever you come up with, it’ll be great!
You still have 10 days (from now) to figure out what to do… Just don’t forget! Even if you just make the call to tell your mom thank you and you love her, she’ll love it. Our moms sacrifice all the time for us so that we can grow and prosper, so just take the minute to let them feel special. Mother’s are a blessing and come in all forms. They deserve to be showered with amazing love all year long.
