So you want to be a writer? The writers we all know are usually the bestselling writers, the ones whose books star in the shop window showcases! Sometimes those even become blockbuster movies. There are also many writers who are shadow writers. These writers write books for people who have a fascinating story to tell. The story is usually one they want to pass on to future generations, by publishing a book.
Many writers also make a living from writing articles for print and digital media, from teaching and lecturing on writing techniques and the like. Of course, all writers would like to make a living solely from selling their books, but publishing a book is a complex event. Even the most talented writers can have a hard time convincing the major publishers to publish their book, especially when it comes to the first book. What a work day looks like for a writer
A writer’s workday varies but some writers set a regular work routine for themselves and write every day! This could mean several hours in front of the computer, trying to write another chapter in their book. Another way to do it is write only when the inspiration is high. Some can write continuously, but inspiration is key for most writers.
Writers also make a living from giving lectures and many of them teach creative writing courses, or serve as lecturers in undergraduate literature studies and the like. Writers who are in their infancy and still unable to make a living from selling their books have to work in other works, sometimes in fields related to the field of creative writing, but often in professions unrelated to it.
In the field of literature, there is no such thing as market advantages. It is never possible to know whether a particular style, or a particular plot will make the book a bestseller. Even the big publishers often make mistakes when they outright reject a book. Joseph Heller, the author of the wonderful “Catch 22” was disqualified by about 20 publishers, before he managed to get his book published.
It can be said that the greatest advantage of a writer today is the determination to succeed! You need to know how to absorb negative answers and believe in yourself. If you believe in it, keep trying to get the book published and most importantly keep writing. If you want to be a writer, then getting a portfolio together is an important step. It will allow you to show others what you’re capable of. It will offer you a way to showcase your work. You may want to look at blogging too. If that’s the route you choose, make sure your work is copyrighted and that people don’t steal the stories that you spent so much time working on.
