Well, we are halfway through. Can you believe it?! This week feels like there’s not much to report. Weather has played a huge crazy part in how much we’ve been able to achieve as far as staying on the planned schedule. But either way, week 4 of the One Room Challenge, is here and we are still going strong. I’m learning that there’s always a lull in the middle and I know I’m a procrastinator, so just wait for a huge rush at the end! But let’s recap & share where we are…
First, we have been able to use the space since the patio was poured which is really nice. Last weekend (after a week that started with snow), we had some friends over for a movie night which worked out amazingly!!!
ONE ROOM CHALLENGE UPDATES
WEEK 1 // WEEK 2 // WEEK 3
It was nice to {1} see the space in use for the first time, but also {2} see how the the space might actually work when it’s all done! I remember when designing I was a little scared to get rid of a bunch of grass, but knew I’d have some on the side for playing which after this weekend I realized is perfect for corn hole and other games! Seeing friends and family out there enjoying it even at the halfway done point made it all worth it!

Then we’ve made small progress on a couple DIY/Updates too!
The Patio Table is coming along… We came up with the design together which is honestly pretty basic but I didn’t want to get too complicated since this is my husbands first big build. We knew we wanted at least one BIG diy for the one room challenge though, and I think an 8×4 table is considered BIG. One day last week he spent the entire day in the garage cutting and whatever. I haven’t helped with much on it yet but stains/paint are up next and that’s on me. Get ready for a full update on what I’ve found from researching and watching way too many youtube videos on staining wood.
Mike swore he measured our current dining table for height, but after we sat down on the chair to test it, I knew it was too high LOL… See Olive sitting UNDER the table! Don’t worry, it’s fixed now! And it’s looking gorgeous! Mike may have watched more youtube videos than I have on tables and outdoor furniture at this point!
Then we’ve been planning out the landscape. Since it keeps freezing and frosting around here I’ve been visiting the home stores and nurseries, but haven’t really purchased much because I’m afraid everything will end up dying. Here’s my plan…
We will be adding mostly hydrangeas and peonies around the patio. I’m hoping for a few Arborvitaes to create a little privacy prior to the privacy screens and pergola (which will not be a part of this one room challenge unfortunately) and boxwoods and some pretty grasses over by the grill area. Overall, the landscaping will be pretty basic just due to time and resources, but I think over the years, this base will work nicely.
HOW TO PARTY IN THE BACKYARD
I did make a trip to Menards this week, but please notice the winter coat. It’s still been quite cold here which as stated above has caused the purchasing delays…
I thought about making my own lattice for between the grill area and window, then quickly realized it’s a much smaller area than I thought it was in my head so I might just buy a black one I saw one at Lowe’s that seemed quite perfect.
Oh! And I’ve made some progress on the outdoor planters. I purchased these from Wal-Mart and now feel like I need a few more… They started a beautiful terra cotta color but when I put them out with everything else, black was the way to go. When I got them I had planned to make them look more like cement, but with all the cement already out there, black works better. See the before and after?
I can’t wait to actually fill them up! Next week you’ll see real filled pretty planters!!!
So that leaves us with what’s left… LOTS! Make sure to follow along on IG to see stories – there’s a highlight called ORC where you’ll find all of the behind the scenes…
